SUMMARY:Family astronomy at Grassholme Observatory
DESCRIPTION:Due to popular demand\, the team at Grassholme Observatory have laid on this exclusive family event to educate on all things spacey. \nThe whole family will enjoy interactive talks in the classroom and then will be able to see and touch rocks from space – meteorites\, learn about space in the purpose-built classroom and then weather permitting outside for some stargazing and peering through telescopes. \nHot chocolate and radiators are available too. Bring warm clothes – it can get chilly when you are outside. The observatory\, classroom and toilets are accessible. This is a pet free event. All children must be supervised by an adult. \nAdult: £19 (16+)\nChild: £12 (1-16)\nConcession: £16 (65+\, Blue Badge holder)\nFamily: £65 (Group ticket for 3-4 people. SUMMARY:Aurora night
DESCRIPTION:The event on 5 November 8pm to 11pm will begin with a welcome from the lead astronomer at Grassholme Observatory\, Gary Fildes. Gary is a very experienced science communicator and astronomer\, and founder of the Kielder Observatory\, where he was Director and CEO for over 11 years. After the welcome Gary will take you on a whistle stop tour of the Universe. Following this\, you will split into groups and\, weather depending\, start observing the sky\, with telescopes and cameras. \nOn certain nights we may even see the Aurora Borealis from Grassholme. It is visible in these skies. But the conditions have to be right for it to be seen and it’s a rare occurrence. Whilst it’s not guaranteed that you will see them – you will leave well equipped on what they are and how to spot them in the future. \nThis is a fun-filled night\, with stunning handouts\, experiments and stargazing with expert tuition from Gary and his team of astronomers. Get wrapped up – it can get chilly when we are outside! This is a pet free event\, so please don’t bring any furry friends! \nPre-booking essential via https://www.grassholmeobservatory.com/book and for full terms and conditions. \nAdult: £24/ Concessions: £20/ Adult: 16+/ Concession: 65+\, under 16s or Blue Badge holder. \nFor directions visit www.grassholmeobservatory.com/contact/ \nGrassholme Observatory is wheelchair accessible and there are accessible toilets on site. For more information about Grassholme Waterside Park visit https://www.watersideparksuk.com/park/grassholme/ \nThis Grassholme Observatory event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 20 October to 5 November 2023 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest23 #NPennDarkSkies

SUMMARY:The Orionid Meteor Shower
DESCRIPTION:Experience viewing up to 20 shooting stars per hour at Grassholme Observatory\, on 20 October 11pm to 2am. Under the wonderfully dark skies view Halley’s Comet\, the most famous interloper of them all\, which is the parent comet for the Orionid Meteor Shower. A good display is expected from this shower as we head into the midnight and beyond. Tiny dust grains\, left behind by Halley’s Comet\, interact with the Earth’s atmosphere as a flash of light! As well as the dazzling show overhead there will be the opportunity to stargaze using the observatory’s telescopes. \nPre-booking is essential via https://www.grassholmeobservatory.com/book\, and for full terms and conditions. \nAdult: £30/ Concessions: £25/ Adult: 16+ Concession: 65+\, under 16 years or Blue Badge holder. \nFor directions view https://www.grassholmeobservatory.com/contact/. \nPlease wrap up warm as it can get chilly when outside. SUMMARY:Exploring our Milky Way
DESCRIPTION:The Milky Way is one of the most visually impactful objects observable in the night sky. To see it you must have inky black night skies (which we have) and no Moon in the\nsky – there’s no Moon tonight and so fingers crossed for clear skies! \nAt this time of year\, the Milky Way hangs high overhead\, and clearly visible are clusters of stars and dark nebulae that weave through the starfields of our home galaxy. Join the Grassholme Observatory team as we marvel at the visual beauty of them through our many telescopes. Observe different star colours and regions where new stars and planets are being forged. \nBring warm clothes – it can get chilly. \nThis event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 21 to 30 October 2022 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest22\n#NPennDarkSkies \nBook on the Grassholme Observatory website

SUMMARY:Introduction to astrophotography
DESCRIPTION:This event will concentrate on the exciting field of astrophotography. Nowadays everyone has a camera\, whether it is on a smartphone or a good DSLR. But have you\never used it to capture the night sky? Tonight’s event aims to teach the basics of night photography. You will learn how to utilise the settings of your camera and what they mean and\nhow to use them wisely on the sky so that you can get some stunning results. \nThe event leader\, Gary Fildes\, has over 25 years of experience in imaging the night sky. After an indoor introduction you will head outside to try it for yourself. \nBring your cameras along and start your journey into astrophotography. Bring warm clothes – it can get chilly when we are outside. \nThis event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 21 to 30 October 2022 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest22\n#NPennDarkSkies \nAdults: £30\nConcession: £25\nAdult: 16+\nConcession: Over 65 / Blue badge holder \n  \nBook on Grassholme Observatory website

SUMMARY:Searching for life and habitable worlds in the universe
DESCRIPTION:A special event at Grassholme Observatory being led by Prof Wallace Arthur \nEvolutionary biologist and Author. Prof Wallace Arthur has dedicated his professional life to all things evolutionary and is the author of many science books – his most recent being The Biological Universe: Life in the Milky Way and beyond – published in 2020. Wallace is also a very keen astronomer – a natural progression therefore would be to consider and research the existence of extraterrestrial life elsewhere in the universe. It has to be the oldest and most profound unanswered questions. So what is the science behind all of this? And how close are we to answering that question. Come along and let Wallace begin to untangle the answers. After the talk\, you will then venture outside to actually observe stars that have known worlds orbiting them\, some of which will be Earth-like. As well as that you’ll look into the inky black moonless skies to see the Milky Way starfields and deep-sky island universes containing billions of suns. \nThis event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 22-31 October 2021 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest21 #NPennDarkSkies
