SUMMARY:Find out about rare Alchemillas
DESCRIPTION:Come along to Hayberries Nature Reserve on Tuesday 18 August\, 9.30am to 12.30pm\, and discover the North Pennines’ rare Lady’s-mantles (Alchemillas). \nVisitors can learn how to tell the difference between the common garden Lady’s-mantle and the rarer species\, some of which are found only in the North Pennines. \nDuring the event\, a group of botanists will be surveying Lady’s-mantles at the reserve to help improve our understanding of where these plants grow and how they are doing. Visitors are welcome to take part in the survey and need to book via the Ticketsource link below. \nDid you know? The plant name\, alchemilla\, means ‘little alchemist’ and it is named after its association with alchemy. Medieval alchemists collected the pristine\, bead-like dew droplets from its water-repellent leaves\, believing it had properties for turning base metals to gold. \nThis free event is open to anyone interested in plants\, wildlife and conservation. It’s also a great chance to find out about future volunteering opportunities and how you can get involved. There will be an information stand near the entrance where staff from the North Pennines National Landscape team will be able to tell you more about the team’s work with rare Lady’s-mantles and answer your questions. \nSuitable for all ages. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Well-behaved dogs on leads allowed. There is tarmac car parking\, but no designated disabled bays. The site consists of unsealed tracks\, bare earth and grass\, and routes can be uneven and narrow. There are various gradients\, including steep sections of path. DESCRIPTION:Wild Wednesdays are activities suitable for children aged five and over to enjoy and be creative. \nJoin us to discover the amazing underwater life of a stream. We will be ‘dipping’ with nets and pots to look for the insect life below the water surface.  \nPlease wear sturdy footwear\, and clothing suitable for the weather and potentially messy activities. Wellies will be necessary if you want to enter the water. We have some available to borrow. \nSuitable for children aged 5 to 12 years. All children need to be accompanied by an adult. SUMMARY:Recording the mining landscape - outdoor day
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a practical outdoor volunteer day learning how to monitor and record the condition of historic mining sites in the North Pennines. \nLocated in the Allenheads Heritage Centre\, 20 August\, 10am to 3pm\, the day will be split into two parts\, combining condition recording with heritage photography to help build consistent records for the Land of Lead and Silver project. \nMorning: learn how to assess and record the condition of historic mining remains using a simple recording form. We will look at structural movement\, vegetation\, erosion\, water damage and masonry loss. \nAfternoon: use your own camera or mobile phone to create a consistent photographic record to support your condition report\, including repeatable viewpoints\, overall and detail photographs\, captions and linking images to written observations. \nThis is not a photogrammetry session or about creating 3D models. Instead\, it focuses on straightforward photographic recording that can be repeated over time to monitor changes in the condition of historic mining sites. \nNo previous experience is required. 18+ only. The first session of 2026 is 17 January. We encourage signing up for as many sessions as possible to get the best experience. \nYAC is the place for young people who might want to become a professional archaeologist in the future\, or just feel like taking up an amazing new hobby. It offers 8 to 16 year olds the chance to get their hands mucky\, participating in archaeology and discovering why it matters. The clubs explore all eras of human history\, including the Romans\, Vikings\, Ancient Egyptians and Victorians\, and members take part in all sorts of hands-on activities\, such as investigating archaeological sites and historic places\, taking part in excavations\, and working with artefacts. \nThe club also run lots of craft-based activities based on archaeological periods and technology\, with members trying out many traditional crafts. \nPlease note that the location and timing of some sessions may change depending on the activities planned. DESCRIPTION:There are several species of metalliferous plants that are found in the North Pennines National Landscape. They grow on old mine sites where there are high concentrations of lead. Over the last few months artist\, Carole McCourt\, has been sharing her love of metalliferous plants with school children\, community groups\, youth groups and artists. Together they have made drawings\, prints and written poetry about these special plants. \nDrop-in and join us as we celebrate their work at High Forest Community Centre\, Sinderhope\, on Saturday 12 September\, 1pm to 4pm. \nAfter the opening event\, the exhibition will open by invitation only\, please contact Carole McCourt on 07772619465. \nDisabled parking is available. Bollihope is near Frosterley and Stanhope in County Durham. \nDigging into the stories buried in the belly of this unique man-made landscape\, five artists take to its hills on Sunday 13 September\, revealing a curious alchemy of music\, dance\, image\, and the pull of the wind itself. There are two performances\, 1pm and 3.30pm\, which last approximately 45 minutes and takes place entirely outdoors. \nPlease bring a blanket or camping chair to settle onto the spoil heap and\, most importantly\, a pair of binoculars to catch the performance up high. The terrain and the route from the car park to the performance area can be viewed here. \nEsther Huss is a contemporary dance artist who regularly collaborates with visual artist Claudia Sacher and sound artist Jeremy Bradfield\, and is joined for this performance by dance artist Aki Iwamoto and musician John Pope. This commission\, awarded a grant by the North Pennines National Landscape team\, sees the five artists reimagine our landscape through dance\, sound and visual art. \nThere is an optional donation of £3. DESCRIPTION:North Pennines YAC is open to everyone aged 8–16 years interested in archaeology. \nBecome a member of the North Pennines Young Archaeologists’ Club (YAC) and get involved in all sorts of activities\, including visiting and investigating archaeological sites and historic places\, trying out traditional crafts\, taking part in excavations\, and lots more. \nThe club meet once a month on a Saturday at Alston Moor Recreation Ground and Pavilion\, 10am to 1pm. The first session of 2026 is 17 January. We encourage signing up for as many sessions as possible to get the best experience. \nYAC is the place for young people who might want to become a professional archaeologist in the future\, or just feel like taking up an amazing new hobby. It offers 8 to 16 year olds the chance to get their hands mucky\, participating in archaeology and discovering why it matters. The clubs explore all eras of human history\, including the Romans\, Vikings\, Ancient Egyptians and Victorians\, and members take part in all sorts of hands-on activities\, such as investigating archaeological sites and historic places\, taking part in excavations\, and working with artefacts. \nThe club also run lots of craft-based activities based on archaeological periods and technology\, with members trying out many traditional crafts. \nPlease note that the location and timing of some sessions may change depending on the activities planned. DESCRIPTION:Discover the freedom of trail running at night\, in the company of experienced runners\, as we follow the route of the High Force and Bowlees Geotrail. From Low Force we will run the Pennine Way to High Force. After experiencing the atmosphere of this magical place\, under the cover of darkness\, we will cross fields back to the visitor centre for tea and cake. \nThis is a\, guided\, 5-mile (8km) trail run over uneven\, rocky\, muddy and slippery ground. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting dark skies event in the Langdon Beck Hotel\, Upper Teesdale\, Co. Durham on Thursday 22 October 2026\, 7pm to 10pm. The evening will be led by Andy Gray – local astronomer and science educator. \nThe evening will start with a talk from Andy Gray on why space travel is hard. Humanity has come a long way in the past 100 years\, breaking free from gravity and reaching Earth’s orbit and the Moon. Andy will explore the challenges of exploring beyond Earth and how likely it is that humans will be able to venture across the Milky Way and continue exploring the Universe. \nAfter Andy’s talk (and if the sky is clear) we will do some informal stargazing at a dark site (field) a short walk from the village hall. Be prepared for a potentially muddy walk and rocky/uneven ground. Gates but no stiles. If live stargazing is not possible there will be an opportunity to ask more questions\, together with a demonstration of the free Stellarium planetarium app. \nThis event is aimed at amateur astronomers and people with an interest in the night sky. \nBring warm/waterproof clothes/a torch (red light if you have one) and wear suitable shoes for uneven/muddy ground. Bring binoculars if you have a pair. Note that this event will go ahead even if the sky conditions are cloudy. SUMMARY:Discover the creatures of the night
DESCRIPTION:Discover the hidden creatures of the night on a guided evening family walk from the Bowlees Visitor Centre in Upper Teesdale\, Tuesday 27 October 2026\, 7pm to 9pm. \nJoin the North Pennines National Landscape team as we explore the fascinating lives of moths\, bats\, owls and other nocturnal mammals. Learn how these remarkable creatures navigate the night\, where they live\, how they hunt\, and the clever ways they avoid becoming prey themselves. \nUsing a range of specialist equipment and survey techniques\, we’ll detect\, attract and observe nocturnal wildlife\, offering a rare opportunity to get a closer look at some of the North Pennines’ most elusive night-time residents. \nThe event includes a short walk of approximately 1 km over rough ground and is suitable for families with children aged six to sixteen. All children must be accompanied by an adult. \n\nOne child: £6\nTwo children: £10\nThree children: £13 (accompanying adults free)\n\nPlease wear sturdy boots or wellies\, warm waterproof clothing\, and bring a torch (a red-light torch is ideal if you have one). SUMMARY:Lantern making and night-time mine trip
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the dark skies of the North Pennines at this evening workshop held at The Hive\, Nenthead\, Sunday\, 1 November 2026\, 4:30pm to 7:30pm. The event includes an underground tour of mine led by knowledgeable volunteers from Nenthead Mines Conservation Society. \nDuring this workshop you will learn how to make your own paper lantern that you will get to take away with you. Following the workshop\, you will then be able to walk in the footsteps of miners past\, and process through Nenthead mine using your lantern. \nAccessibility information: the walk through the mine site and the underground portion is generally level and flat. The underground tour is generally tall enough to walk at full height\, although the first approximately 30m requires you to duck as this is the lowest part of the mine. There are two short ladders to climb as part of the tour which have handrails and are firmly installed. \nSuitable for children ages 7+. All children must be accompanied by an adult. All children will need to be able to walk by themselves. This event is not suitable for dogs. No designated parking\, but drop-off near door. DESCRIPTION:Volunteer opportunities to undertake maintenance works to various mine sites across the North Pennines\, on the first Tuesday of each month\, commencing 3 March 2026\, 10am to 3pm. \nIn this monthly activity you will join Gary and Arran of Heritage Consolidation\, to undertake maintenance tasks at lead mining structures. \nSteel toe capped boots and gloves are strongly recommended for this task\, gloves can be provided.\nMore details will be provided upon signing up. Suitable for 18+ \nLocations will be decided closer to the date. \nDates are:-\n3 March\n7 April\n5 May\n2 June\n7 July\n4 August\n1 September\n6 October\n3 November\n1 December \nSign up using the Better Impact volunteer link \n
