SUMMARY:Historic environment research workshop: unlocking the asylum archives
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting skills workshop at Carlisle Archives as part of a new volunteer research project “Melancholy\, Mania and Metallurgy: Unlocking the Asylum Archives”. This project will be uncovering the stories of North Pennines lead miners and their families who spent time in county asylums. \nThe workshop\, on Tuesday 3 March\, 12 noon to 4pm\, is an opportunity to learn archive skills and interact with historical material from the Garlands Hospital collection (formerly known as Cumberland and Westmorland County Lunatic Asylum). It will include: \n•    A behind the scenes tour of the archive\n•    A display class with historical material from the Garlands Hospital collection (patient registers\, illustrated casebooks\, post-mortem reports) exploring how to use them and what they can tell us\n•    An illustrated history of Cumberland and Westmorland County Lunatic Asylum\n•    Introduction to palaeography skills (reading old handwriting) with an activity using original documents\n•    Introduction to digital resources session with an activity using Ancestry records \nPlease note that this project is for adults only. DESCRIPTION:In this workshop held at Cumbria Archives\, Tuesday 21 January\, 10am to 3pm\, we’ll explore the different types of materials available\, (such as letters\, diaries\, newspapers\, photographs\, wills\, maps\, and court records)\, and how to find and safely handle fragile items\, and practice some essential research skills on original documents such as palaeography (reading old handwriting). \nYou will also be given an exclusive behind the scenes tour by the Cumbria Archives staff. \nAll are welcome from complete beginners to seasoned researchers. For those interested\, there is the opportunity to hone these skills as part of an exciting longer research project exploring the social history of the men and women who shaped the North Pennines and its landscape. \nPlease sign up using the volunteer platform Better Impact \n
