SUMMARY:Introduction to astrophotography
DESCRIPTION:If you have ever wanted to capture the wonders of the night sky but don’t know where to start – this is the event for you. Join Martin Kitching for an engaging talk and workshop at Carrshield Village Hall\, on Monday 27 October\, 7pm to 9pm. \nMartin Kitching\, Director of Northern Experience Wildlife Tours\, is an accomplished astrophotographer with many years of practical experience both as an astronomer and photographer. \nDuring the event\, which is aimed at beginners/improvers\, Martin will take you through the basics of night-time photography and will share with you some hints and tips to improve your after-dark images. \nThe location of this event has access to a dark night sky. If the sky conditions are suitable we will hopefully get outside and try and put Martin’s tips into practice. Note that the event will still take place if the sky is overcast. \nAdult 18+: £15\nChild (under 18): £10\nConcession (65+): £10 \nThe toilet facilities consist of a compost toilet (shared with people staying in the camping barn) above the village hall. Accessing the toilets involves a short (c50m) outside walk on uneven ground. \nBring warm/waterproof clothes/a torch (red light if you have one) and wear suitable shoes for uneven ground. Bring your camera/smartphone with you. \nNo dogs please – they’re a trip hazard in the dark. \nBook using the link to Ticketsource below: \n\n\n\n \n \n\n \nImage: Rookhope Arch (c) Cain Scrimgeour \nThis event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 22 October to 2 November 2025 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org #NorthPennStarFest25 #NPennDarkSkies

SUMMARY:Introduction to QGIS workshop
DESCRIPTION:Help us map historic sites by learning how to use this digital mapping software\, QGIS (Quantum Geographic Information System). This can be used to look at how many historic sites we have in a particular area of the North Pennines\, where they are located\, and give insight into how the sites were used. The QGIS workshop is on Saturday 2 November 10am to 4pm\, at Carrshield Village Hall\, near Hexham. \nQGIS is a free digital mapping software that is commonly used in archaeology and heritage management. The programme can be used to gather\, store and visualise data. You will also receive a copy of our QGIS manual that you can keep and use as you continue using the programme. \nPlease note\, all attendees need to be over the age of 18 and will need to bring along their own laptop in order to be able to join the workshop. \nPlease sign up using the volunteer system Better Impact \n

SUMMARY:Traditional clippy-mat course
DESCRIPTION:Come and join us for a six-week traditional clippy-mat course at Carshield Village Hall where you will create your very own 18 x 18 inch rug\, cushion\, or wall hanging. \nWe’ll take a step back into history and explore the lives of the lead and silver miners and their families of the North Pennines. You will learn about the traditional techniques of clippy-mat making\, which was an important craft in most North Pennines villages\, taking inspiration from old photos and stories. We will conclude the six-week course by displaying all the creations together. \nNo prior experience is required. Participants are encouraged to be available for all of the sessions to ensure they get the most out of the course. Each workshop will run from 6.30pm to 8.30pm in Carrshield Village Hall on the following Mondays: 24 June\, 1 July\, 8 July\, 15 July\, 29 July and 5 August. \nAll equipment\, materials\, and refreshments will be provided. All you need to do is come along\, create\, learn\, chat and enjoy. \nThis workshop is part of the 2024 Land of Lead and Silver community arts programme. Leanne Bain\, of Hippy Lizard\, was one of four community arts bursary recipients. SUMMARY:Carrshield Skywatch
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a journey from the start to the end of time – at this atmospheric venue in the West Allen Valley. Your host for the event is local astronomer\, astrophotographer and science communicator – Andy Gray. \nAfter we have settled in Andy Gray will talk about how telescopes have changed our view of the universe and humanities position within it – ‘From Lippershey to the James Webb Telescope’. Our ability to see into space and into the past has changed our view of our place from being at the centre\, to being almost insignificant\, and possibly even alone in the vastness. We will look at how this happened from the very first telescopes\, looking at visible light\, up to the most recent telescopes which can observe and image at almost all the wavelengths of light. This has enabled us to learn a great deal of how stars and galaxies form\, grow and die. We will be able to see how the universe looked just after the big bang and what the end of the universe might be. \nFollowing Andy’s talk we will\, sky conditions allowing\, do some live stargazing – using telescopes and astronomy binoculars. \nWear wellies/boots and bring warm and waterproof clothing. You will need a torch too (ideally red light). Light refreshments are included. Suitable for ages 10+. No dogs. \nCarrshield Village Hall is part of the old Barney Craig Mineshop almost at the head of the West Allen Valley. The upper floor of the building has been converted into Carrshield Camping Barn – if you fancy making a night of it why not book a room? See www.carrshieldcampingbarn.co.uk for details and availability. \nThis event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 21 to 30 October 2022 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest22 #NPennDarkSkies \nAdults: £15\nConcessions: £10 (under 18s\, over 65+)\nFamilies: £35\nSuitable for ages 10+
