SUMMARY:Dark sky astronomy and stargazing
DESCRIPTION:The event will begin with a welcome from the lead astronomer at Grassholme Observatory\, Gary Fildes. Gary is a very experienced science communicator and astronomer\, and founder of the Kielder Observatory\, where he was Director and CEO for over 11 years. \nAfter the welcome Gary will take you on a whistle-stop tour of the Universe. Following this\, you will split into groups and\, weather depending\, start observing the sky\, with telescopes and cameras. \nWith no Moon in the sky\, you will look out for the Milky Way\, and many deep sky objects like galaxies\, nebulae and star clusters. You will then use the robotic telescope to scour the skies for other jewels in the cosmos. \nThen it’s back into the classroom for a hot drink and questions. Bring warm clothes – it can get chilly when we are outside. This is a pet free event\, so please don’t bring any. \nVisit https://www.grassholmeobservatory.com/book to book and for full terms and conditions. \n\nAdult: £24 (16+)\nFamily: £70 (group ticket for 3-4 people\, max of 4\, min of 3 – at least 1 child)\nConcessions: £22 (65+\, 1-16 years or Blue Badge holder)\n\nFor directions visit www.grassholmeobservatory.com/contact/ \nGrassholme Observatory is wheelchair accessible and there are accessible toilets on site. SUMMARY:Jupiter and Saturn – the giant planets
DESCRIPTION:Join us on 27 October 8pm to 11pm  as on these dark starry nights\, we are treated to a planetary delight as these 2 celestial heavyweights line up for our telescopes. \nJupiter is the largest planet in our solar system and could swallow ~1300 Earths\, this gas giant planet is a turbulent environment as it spins on its axis once every 9.5 hours – this makes it the fastest rotating object in our solar system. Due to this exceptional rotational period\, Jupiter has a very turbulent surface with high-speed winds whipping its surface up into a visual drama on a cosmic scale. With bands and belts\, transition regions\, and big red spots\, Jupiter has it all\, and Grassholme Observatory has the kit to bring it alive. \nNext is by far most people’s favourite. Saturn with its glorious ring system dazzles the observer with a veritable observing feast! \nGet wrapped up – it can get chilly when we are outside! SUMMARY:Exploring our Milky Way
DESCRIPTION:The Milky Way is one of the most visually impactful objects observable in the night sky. To see it you must have inky black night skies (which we have) and no Moon in the\nsky – there’s no Moon tonight and so fingers crossed for clear skies! \nAt this time of year\, the Milky Way hangs high overhead\, and clearly visible are clusters of stars and dark nebulae that weave through the starfields of our home galaxy. Join the Grassholme Observatory team as we marvel at the visual beauty of them through our many telescopes. Observe different star colours and regions where new stars and planets are being forged. \nBring warm clothes – it can get chilly. \nThis event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 21 to 30 October 2022 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest22\n#NPennDarkSkies \nBook on the Grassholme Observatory website

SUMMARY:Introduction to astrophotography
DESCRIPTION:This event will concentrate on the exciting field of astrophotography. Nowadays everyone has a camera\, whether it is on a smartphone or a good DSLR. But have you\never used it to capture the night sky? Tonight’s event aims to teach the basics of night photography. You will learn how to utilise the settings of your camera and what they mean and\nhow to use them wisely on the sky so that you can get some stunning results. \nThe event leader\, Gary Fildes\, has over 25 years of experience in imaging the night sky. After an indoor introduction you will head outside to try it for yourself. \nBring your cameras along and start your journey into astrophotography. Bring warm clothes – it can get chilly when we are outside. \nThis event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 21 to 30 October 2022 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest22\n#NPennDarkSkies \nAdults: £30\nConcession: £25\nAdult: 16+\nConcession: Over 65 / Blue badge holder \n  \nBook on Grassholme Observatory website

SUMMARY:Dark Sky Astronomy and Stargazing at Grassholme Observatory
DESCRIPTION:Dark Sky Astronomy and Stargazing at Grassholme Observatory \nThe event will begin with a welcome from lead astronomer\, Gary Fildes – an experienced science communicator and astronomer. After the welcome\, Gary and the team will\nescort you into the new state of the art classroom with high definition (HD) projection system. Gary will take you on a whistle stop tour of the Universe. \nAfterwards you will split into groups and\, weather depending\, start observing the sky. With no Moon in the sky\, you will look out for the stunning Milky Way\, which is high\noverhead\, and the planets Saturn\, Mars and Jupiter. We will then use our robotic telescope to scour the skies for other jewels in the cosmos. \nThen it’s back into the classroom for a hot drink and questions. Bring warm clothes – it can get chilly when we are outside. \nBook at Grassholme Observatory website. \nThis event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 21 to 30 October 2022 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest22\n#NPennDarkSkies

SUMMARY:Searching for life and habitable worlds in the universe
DESCRIPTION:A special event at Grassholme Observatory being led by Prof Wallace Arthur \nEvolutionary biologist and Author. Prof Wallace Arthur has dedicated his professional life to all things evolutionary and is the author of many science books – his most recent being The Biological Universe: Life in the Milky Way and beyond – published in 2020. Wallace is also a very keen astronomer – a natural progression therefore would be to consider and research the existence of extraterrestrial life elsewhere in the universe. It has to be the oldest and most profound unanswered questions. So what is the science behind all of this? And how close are we to answering that question. Come along and let Wallace begin to untangle the answers. After the talk\, you will then venture outside to actually observe stars that have known worlds orbiting them\, some of which will be Earth-like. As well as that you’ll look into the inky black moonless skies to see the Milky Way starfields and deep-sky island universes containing billions of suns. \nThis event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 22-31 October 2021 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org.uk #NorthPennStarFest21 #NPennDarkSkies
