SUMMARY:Dark skies stroll
DESCRIPTION:An opportunity to stroll around Nenthead Mines when it is dark on 25 October\, 7pm to 9pm. This atmospheric walk offers a rare opportunity to explore a historic mine site after dark\, safely guided by a professional who knows the area inside and out. \nThe area is known for its outstanding stargazing potential—and a chance to reflect on what it might have felt like for miners long ago making their way home after a shift\, surrounded by silence and starlight. \nAll ages are welcome (children must be accompanied by an adult and must be able to walk or be carried – paths may not be suitable for pushchairs). Please bring a torch and dress warmly. Well-behaved dogs on a short lead are welcome. \nThe walk will cover approximately 3 miles\, mostly on flat ground\, with breaks along the way. Final details of the route may change\, so please check back closer to the event for updates. \nOptional donation of £3. Your donation enables the North Pennines National Landscape team to protect and restore this special place and help people connect with nature. \nPlease book using the link to Ticketsource \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\nThis event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 22 October to 2 November 2025 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org \n#NorthPennStarFest25 #NPennDarkSkies \n

SUMMARY:Two-day photogrammetry and drone flying workshop
DESCRIPTION:Get involved in the free two day photogrammetry and drone flying workshop at Nenthead Mines\, Alston\, on 16 and 17 September\, 10am to 4pm. \nPhotogrammetry is the method of creating a virtual 3D model from a selection of overlapping photographs. The technique is increasingly used by conservators and archaeologists to record\, investigate and promote heritage. \nLearn how to fly a small drone safely and legally. Discover how to use the drone to explore and create three-dimensional digital models of old sites and buildings. You can see similar models created here. \nThe workshop is relaxed and fun\, taking place in an interesting historic industrial location\, and gives you a chance to explore the local traditional architecture of the North Pennines. You will also have the opportunity to venture underground on a free mine tour\, to learn about the site and why it’s so important to the area. \nAll equipment and training are provided by Elder Archaeology and the North Pennines National Landscape team. You don’t need any previous experience to join. The workshop is suitable for ages 14 and over – all children must be accompanies by an adult. \nThis workshop is being run as part of Heritage Open Days and the National Landscape’s Land of Lead and Silver project. \nSign up for both days using the volunteer platform Better Impact

SUMMARY:Arts activity: Spirit of Place
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an outdoor workshop at Nenthead Mines on 30 August 10am to 2pm to discover secrets of the mining landscape through drawing. \nWith guidance and demonstrations from North Pennine artist\, Lionel Playford\, we will explore ways of sketching not just the appearance of this heritage landscape with its fascinating history but something of the spirit of the place as it feels to each of us. A member of staff from the North Pennines AONB Partnership will be joining us to answer questions about what we are drawing; the lead mining history and to help us picture working life when the quarry and mines were operating. \nFollowing the sketching portion of the workshop we will have an indoor discussion about the experience with free refreshments. \nPlease bring your own drawing materials if you wish\, but we will also bring a supply of sketchbooks\, graphite\, charcoal and watercolour pencils for you to use. \nThe workshop is suitable for ages 8+; children must be accompanied by an adult. \nPlease book using the link below. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n  \n         \n
