SUMMARY:Mapping the stars in the tarn
DESCRIPTION:We are building a small stargazing pavilion on the south-eastern side of Talkin Tarn as part of the Fellfoot Forward Landscape Partnership Scheme with Pons Aelius\, the designers and makers\, and Cumberland Council. \nJoin us and artist\, Dominic Smith\, for a special event creating panels for a temporary roof for the pavilion. Working with photographic panels and found natural materials the light sensitive panels will map the constellation of stars to be seen from the pavilion at the summer equinox. \nEach roof panel is made from special photographic material that changes shade according to the daylight levels at the time of its creation. Each of the nine panels will take 30 minutes to create. The roof will be installed on the pavilion at the end of the day. \nThis free event will take place outdoors\, it is accessible to all and no experience/skills are required. Drop-in at anytime during the day\, no booking required. \nThe pavilion is to be constructed in timber\, echoing ancient ‘roundhouse’ construction\, with hazel panels wrapped around the outside. All the materials used in the construction are to be sourced locally. The stargazing pavilion will be co-constructed with volunteers who will be making the hazel panels that will encase the green wood uprights and seating.

SUMMARY:Fellfoot Forward Stars in the tarn launch 4 March
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch event of the ‘Stars in the tarn’ project where you can meet the team of designers\, makers\, and crafts people\, discuss the design of the stargazing pavilion\, and find out about your opportunities to get involved. \nDark skies are a key characteristic of the Fellfoot Forward area’s heritage and Carlisle City Council are keen to protect the dark skies at Talkin Tarn in support of wildlife\, dark sky events\, and to gain designation as a Dark Sky Discovery Site. \nWe have commissioned a stargazing pavilion at Talkin Tarn\, which will encourage people to use the site for stargazing and which can also be used during the daytime as a space for reflection. The stargazing pavilion draws upon the history and materials used in traditional round house construction to bring a new place to rest\, reflect and look up. \nThis is a drop-in event at Talkin Tarn education cabin between 10am – 2pm. All are welcome\, no booking required.

SUMMARY:Nature's Calendar at Talkin Tarn
DESCRIPTION:Nature’s Calendar at Talkin Tarn\nCome and celebrate the changing of the seasons and learn how to record the signs of autumn in your area for the Woodland Trust’s Nature’s Calendar database. We’ll meet at the log cabin for 10am and head out on a family friendly walk where we’ll encounter trees beginning to take on their autumn colours. \nNo prior knowledge is necessary\, as we’ll go through the identification of some common trees on the day. Afterwards\, we’ll have lunch and look at how you can upload your own records into Nature’s Calendar. \nNature’s Calendar is a long-standing citizen science project\, hosted by The Woodland Trust\, which dates as far back as 1736. By uploading records of seasonal changes onto the database\, you can help scientists answer questions such as what effect weather has on wildlife\, and whether climate change is affecting timings in nature. \nThis event is open to everyone\, including families\, although the terrain may be uneven so please ensure you have suitable footwear.  The walk will take approximately 2 hours so bring appropriate clothing and a packed lunch. Places are limited so booking is essential. \n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n
