Talk and stargazing opportunity at Alston Moor Golf Club – a truly dark site in the South Tyne Valley. This will be a double event in one evening: firstly there will be a stargazing event with inside talks and outside stargazing (with telescopes and binoculars); and secondly it is an opportunity to find out about exciting plans for a new observatory at the Golf Club.
There will also be a chance to discuss how the new observatory will be a first for Cumbria with a remotely opening and closing roof, and a first for the north of England since it will mean it can be accessed remotely by amateur, professional and educational observers.
The new observatory will be available for visitors to the North Pennines – the darkest mainland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). At other times it will be used for amateur stargazing, deep space observing by professional astronomers and astrophotography sessions. The golf club committee is on board and the idea is to form a new astronomical society to look after the new facility.
Aimed at amateur astronomers over 18 years old and members of the Alston Moor community (including business owners). Email David Hymers (david@davidhymers.com) to secure your place and for payment details.
