Flood control

Flood control

Peatlands that are in a good condition reduce the risk of flooding as they slow the release of heavy rainfall into watercourses. At a time when climate change is leading to water shortages and more frequent flooding, it has never been more urgent to restore our peatlands. Damming gullies and restoring vegetation helps to slow the flow of water during periods of heavy rainfall, keeping the peat wet and healthy and reducing runoff downstream.
