Pennine Way People

The North Pennines National Landscape has brought together volunteers with a passion for the countryside and a sense of place to look after a stretch of one of the country’s most iconic walking routes.

Through the Pennine Way People project, volunteers look after a 73-mile stretch of the Pennine Way National Trail which falls in the North Pennines National Landscape and UNESCO Global Geopark, between Tan Hill on the Teesdale and North Yorkshire border to Greenhead in Northumberland. The route attracts thousands of walkers every year and when combined with temperamental weather conditions the trail can become a victim of its own success, with the ground underfoot becoming boggy and eroded.

There will be a regular programme of practical works including stile repairs, drystone walling, path resurfacing and drainage works. No prior experience is required but a good level of fitness would be beneficial. Volunteer days will be advertised through the Better Impact system and through our monthly volunteer newsletter.

To find out more about route improvements, please contact Jack Ravenscroft (Mob: 07901326274, email: jack@northpennines.org.uk). Volunteers can also apply to be allocated a specific stretch of the route to look after as its ‘champion’.
