Re-establishing sphagnum

Re-establishing sphagnum

We reintroduce sphagnum moss to increase its coverage on the peatland and to provide suitable conditions for natural revegetation of damaged peat areas. There are two ways this can be done:

  • by collecting clumps of sphagnum from areas of healthy vegetation and moving them to areas of degraded peat
  • using commercially-produced sphagnum plug plants from a local supplier. The plug plants are either one type of sphagnum species or a mix of: Sphagnum capillifolium, Sphagnum palustre, Sphagnum pappillosum, Sphagnum subnitens and Sphagnum medium. The sphagnum is planted in the bottom of wet gullies and on areas of flat bare peat.
