Sense of Place survey
Your North Pennines – what’s special to you?
We’re running a survey to find out more about people’s feelings and thoughts about the North Pennines, and their experiences of living or visiting here. We’re hoping to hear from local people and visitors, to discover what people feel is special to them about the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and UNESCO Global Geopark.
We will be using the results of the survey to compile a ‘Sense of Place Toolkit’ to be used here by the North Pennines AONB Partnership team, as well as by partner organisations.
The survey is being compiled as part of a new funding bid to explore the geological and mining heritage of the North Pennines and how these have shaped the landscape and culture of the area. The project, the Land of Lead and Silver, has been supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic England. If we are successful with our bid for Stage 2 funding, it will be a four-year project (2024-27), exploring and conserving this heritage. It will deliver conservation activity across eight scheduled and at-risk mining sites; public programmes to engage new audiences through an arts and cultural programme and young people’s activities; and volunteering opportunities ranging from archiving and research to assisting with recording.
