Montane Spine Race events support the Pennine Way

9 January 2025

The 2025 Montane Winter Spine Race takes place between Saturday 11 and Sunday 19 January 2025 with competitors running the length of the Pennine Way. Throughout January, participants across the world take part in the Virtual Spine Race Challenges, often without visiting the trail itself. Both sets of events are supporting the maintenance of the Pennine Way National Trail.

Money raised from the Virtual Spine Race Challenges contributed to the installation of two new gates in Baldersdale, County Durham in 2024. The work was carried out by volunteers from the North Pennines National Landscape team’s Pennine Way People project.

Over the course of two weeks, volunteers and staff from the North Pennines National Landscape team installed two kissing gates at Clove Lodge, Baldersdale. These gates, which have replaced stone stiles, will greatly improve the accessibility of this popular stretch of the trail, adding to a series of works aimed at opening this section to a wider variety of people.
