Join the team at the North Pennines Observatory for this family friendly creative introduction to astronomy – bringing together art and science to explore the constellations and our near planets as viewed from the North Pennines.
Guest astronomer, Roy Alexander, will start with a beginner’s guide around the night sky. If the sky is clear you’ll be outside looking up with laser pointers to identify the cosmos looking in particular, for Saturn, Jupiter and the constellations of Taurus, the Seven Sisters, and much, much more. If it’s cloudy, no worries we’ll use our astronomy software and big screen projection to show you a virtual image of the ‘live’ sky that night.
But it won’t stop there, ACA’s creative director and artist Alan Smith will overlap with Roy to take you back through art history looking at how humankind has creatively interpreted the cosmos through some incredible artwork. You will then have the opportunity to draw your own map of the cosmos and create your own constellations to take home.
