Arts and creative communities survey

Arts and creative communities survey

We’re looking for artists, creatives, and cultural & community organisations either based in the North Pennines, or who work or plan to work in the North Pennines to help us shape our creative programme.

We’ve launched a survey for people to share their ideas of what makes an exciting and innovative arts programme. We also hope to start conversations that may lead to creative partnerships when we reach the delivery stage of a new project.

The findings of this survey will support the development of a multi-year project proposal – called Land of Lead and Silver – that the AONB Partnership will fundraise for in 2023.

What is the Land of Lead and Silver?

The geological and mining heritage of the North Pennines has shaped its landscape and culture. The Land of Lead and Silver will be a four-year project (2024-27) to explore and conserve this heritage. It will span conservation activity across 27 at risk mining heritage sites. It will also involve public programmes to increase our engagement with its social and environmental story; arts and cultural projects will form part of this public programme.

We are currently developing a stage 2 National Lottery Heritage Fund bid. In addition, we are identifying opportunities for match funding through other possible funders. If successful, the four-year scheme will be delivered from January 2024 to December 2027.

What is your plan for arts and cultural activity within the Land of Lead and Silver project?

We are still developing it. That’s one of the reasons we’re asking people to help us via this survey.

Our aim is to establish creative partnerships and to commission projects that meaningfully interpret and make visible the multi-layered story of mining in the North Pennines. We want to involve communities and visitors in this process.

We are interested in projects that explore a range of themes. Our programme will cover everything from the impact of mining in the landscape, to its legacy with rural communities living there today.

I’m interested. What’s next?

Complete this survey. Tell us why you’re interested. Share it with others.

We will also be hosting a Teams call from 2 to 3pm Thursday 29 June. At this event the North Pennines AONB team will speak more about the project and we’ll respond to questions. Please register your interest to attend by completing the details in the survey or by emailing rebecca@northpenninesaonb.org.uk
