Allenheads village geosite
There has been a settlement at Allenheads (formerly known as Easterheads) since the 17th Century. Its growth and development boomed after the Blackett Beaumont family purchased the mining rights.
By the early 19th Century, Allenheads was the most important lead mining centre in Britain.
Allenheads provides a window into the past with many relics of the mining industry still visible today, however it is also a living, thriving and attractive village with plenty for visitors to see and do.
Explore Allenheads and its surroundings. Immerse yourself in its industrial heritage, follow a geotrail, cycle or ski in the beautiful landscape, enjoy some of Britain’s best dark skies and take refreshment in the local café or pub.
