Stanhope Burn Geotrail
This simple, semi-linear 3.5 mile (5.6km) route takes you from the small market town of Stanhope in the heart of Weardale out into the surrounding landscape to explore the area’s rich geological and mining heritage.
The trail identifies 9 points of interest along a set route, with a number of optional detours and the opportunity for a longer walk.
A slightly longer, 3.9 mile (6.3km) circular route can be made by following the road past the mine after the final stop. This trail uses well-marked footpaths and minor roads.
Start location: Durham Dales Centre car park (NY 995 392).
Terrain: On-road sections, off-road sections and steep sections.
There is public transport and parking available.
