Geotours App
Explore more of the North Pennines National Landscape and UNESCO Global Geopark using the Geotours app.
The Geotours app features a selection of favourite walks and places to explore across the North Pennines, with tours suitable for children and families, right up to hardy adventurers. Each route includes directions, images and things to spot, and many include audio and quiz questions themed around the geology, history and wildlife of the area. The tours are designed to be used on location, but can also be viewed at home if you’d like to know what to expect or find out about somewhere you’re not visiting. The app also includes tours in other Geoparks along the European Atlantic Geotourism Route – an international selection of areas with stunning landscapes, distinctive wildlife and fascinating cultures – so you can explore some of these destinations from the comfort of your own home or even plan a future trip.
Using the app:
The Geotours app is available on most Android and Apple mobile devices and can be downloaded from the app stores (link below). Download the app and select North Pennines to view the available tours in the area.
Each tour on the list downloads separately and it’s best to download a chosen tour before you set off as some sites have no internet coverage. Each tour contains some basic directions for getting to the start point. Within each tour is a list of points of interest, usually designed to be followed in a particular order and giving directions of how to get from one point to the next. Download and read the ‘Introduction’ for more instructions within the app.

More to discover
The North Pennines National Landscape produces a wide variety of themed, self-guided walks booklets and leaflets. Versions of some of the tours featured in the app are also available as leaflets or PDFs (use the links in the table to find these). There are also a large number of walking guides produced by others available for the area.
A good way to find out about more walks, cycle routes and places to visit is to contact the nearest information centre to where you are planning to go. Alternatively, you can access a selection of downloadable guides by checking out the ‘More about…’ section at the side of this page or by referring to our map on the Visit & explore page.
The Geotours app was produced as part of the Interreg Atlantic Geoparks project, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund. Its development was also supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Find out more about the European Atlantic Geotourism Route here: geotourismroute.eu
