Nature Calling: Bridging the Tees
7 May 2025
Creating music inspired by bridges over the Tees
As part of the National Landscape Association’s initiative, Nature Calling, we have launched a project for young people called ‘Bridging the Tees’.
Working with Hartlepool-based ‘We Make Sound’ we have engaged a group of young people to make music responding to Wynch Bridge in Upper Teesdale and the Transporter Bridge in Middlesbrough. Both of these bridges were built to help people cross the Tees to get to work, and the group will explore how they differ in construction, environment and soundscape.
In April the young people spent the day at Wynch Bridge recording the sounds of Low Force, lapwings and even the insects that live in the puddles near the bridge. The group will then visit the Transporter Bridge and discover the sounds in a different location.
The young people will then work together, bringing these experiences into a piece of music, which will be performed later in the summer at an event in Teesdale.
