Having healthy peatlands is vital as they provide a home for a variety of species. Blanket bog, a type of peatland, is internationally recognised as an important and protected habitat. There are a variety of animal species which live on blanket bog in the North Pennines such as the curlew, red grouse, black grouse, the common lizard, the adder and many more. Some of the plant species found here include: sphagnum, yellow marsh saxifrage, cottongrass and sundew.
