Trees and woodlands

The North Pennines National Landscape team works with landowners and land managers across the National Landscape and beyond to improve the area of tree cover, by creating new wooded habitat and managing existing woodlands.

Woodland habitat is great for wildlife, recreation and timber production. It is also recognised that woodlands offer environmental services such as flood reduction downstream and they store carbon which helps in the fight against climate change. Trees on farms play a vital role in providing fodder, shade and shelter for livestock.

Trees have an important role to play in the natural landscape of the North Pennines but it is crucial that they are planted in the right place where they will not impact on other important habitats and species: for example peatlands and wading birds.

The North Pennines National Landscape team can:
• Provide advice on the right types of trees and where to plant
• Help you to consider different types of wooded habitat, including woodland, hedgerows, scrub, wood pasture and agroforestry
• Advise on the range of funding support available and support you with grant applications
• Carry out assessments and write plans for existing woodlands
