Have a go at blacksmithing on a day-long course on Saturday 31 October 2026, 9.30am to 4.30pm, at Harehope Quarry, near Frosterley.

Try your hand at the techniques used when hitting red hot metal with hammers and shaping it into useful everyday items on a hand-cranked charcoal forge.

You will first try out some simple techniques to make s-hooks and then use the skills of drawing out, bending, hot punching and scrolling to make a beautiful coat hook. If time allows, you will be able to explore these techniques further working on your own project, which may include pokers and toasting forks.

All tools, materials and safety equipment are provided. Please wear closed-toed, sturdy shoes and cotton rich clothes (nothing that will melt with sparks such as fleeces). Please note: you will get dirty.
