Saturn – the enigmatic ringed beauty is by far most people’s favourite – if you haven’t looked through a telescope at Saturn then do not miss this opportunity to do so. With its glorious ring system dazzling the observer it is a veritable observing feast.
Tonight, Saturday 31 October 2026, 8pm to 11pm, Saturn is at its closest to the Earth, in opposition. An unforgettable night under the dark skies of the North Pennines at Grassholme Observatory. As well as observing Saturn hopefully you will be able to see a host of other objects, including the Milky Way.

Bring warm clothes – it can get chilly when you are outside. The observatory, classroom and toilets are accessible. This is a pet free event.

If you are unable to undertake dark sky observing because of cloud cover then they will offer you a 20% discount on a future booking made and taken within eight weeks of the event.
