FAQs

What is a Tramper?

The Tramper is a specially designed, all-terrain mobility scooter, which can be used off road and even on rough ground, mud and grass. It is very robust, with light, accurate steering and tailored suspension, making it easy to handle and comfortable to ride on. It enables people who have disabilities or issues with mobility to experience the countryside, and to accompany friends and family when out walking.

Do I need training?

The Tramper is an easy to handle, all-terrain scooter which is very similar to conventional mobility scooters. When you hire a Tramper at any of the sites within the North Pennines you will have a short induction. The induction includes: being shown how to use the controls; which routes you can go on; and the emergency procedures. You will be asked to demonstrate that you can drive the Tramper safely. This is so you feel safe and confident using the Tramper before you take it out for a ride yourself.

Where can I take the Tramper?

Trampers can only be used on routes that have been risk assessed and are considered suitable for Tramper use. At each site, you would be given maps and information on the available routes.

Is there a hire fee?

Anyone who wants to hire a Tramper at any of the sites must be a member of Outdoor Mobility. Membership options are either £2.50 for a two-week taster membership, or £10 for an annual membership. Both passes allow you to use any Tramper at the North Pennines Outdoor Mobility sites, as well as at Outdoor Mobility hire locations in the North York Moors and the Lake District national parks.

Who can hire the Tramper?

The Trampers are open to hire for anyone who has difficulty walking because of permanent or temporary mobility issues. You do not have to be registered as disabled or have a blue badge to use the Tramper.

I have use of one hand. Can I use the Tramper?

Yes. You only need good use of one hand to operate the Tramper. The controls can be switched to suit either your left or right hand. You do need to be able to quickly release your grip in order to do an emergency brake.

Do I need to have someone with me?

Yes, you must be accompanied by an adult when hiring out the Tramper.
